The Yoo Siblings began their journey in music under the tutelage of diverse musicians from Temple University, Curtis, and Juilliard with several different instruments from the young age of 3 through 6. They were also with Settlement Music School for many years. They perform for community events, weddings, birthday parties, graduation ceremonies, receptions, special music at churches, as well as for many other occasions with the piano, harp, violin, flute, cello, guitar, and vocal singing since 2008.
They also give the young and young-at-heart musicians from Joy Music Studio the opportunity to join them in performing for different occasions. Find out more about Joy Music Studio.
Joy Jieun graduated Summa Cum Laude from Temple University Boyer College of Music and Dance with a degree in Music Education and a concentration in Piano Performance. Throughout her four years, she was on the Dean's lists and nominated as one of twelve Teacher Champions in the Education department as well as the Music department by Temple Professors; she was a recipient of many honors awards and scholarships including Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges. She studied under Dr. Alexander Fiorillo, a student of the well renowned Vladimir Horowitz and as a fun fact Professor Fiorillo played in the same ensemble group as Albert Einstein! Joy is certified to teach and conduct ensembles, chorus, and orchestras at public and private schools from grades K-12 in guitar, strings, percussion, woodwinds, brass, and theory; she is also certified as a TESOL/ESL teacher. She is currently at Seylar Elementary School in the Pennridge School District as the K-5 general music teacher, 4-5 chorus teacher, and 3-5 orchestra teacher. In addition, Joy is the founder, director, and teacher of Joy Music Studio. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in music technology for music education and administration.
Charis (Paul) Jae-young graduated from Temple University College of Science and Technology with a degree in Information Science in Technology. He served as senate chair of the college student body and was a recipient of many honors and awards including the presidential award. During his junior year, he was selected as one of two students from Temple University to receive The Society for Information Management of Philadelphia due to being an “academically talented and deserving student majoring in Information Science and Technology to promote the advancement of the information technology field.” In addition, he completed an internship with Protiviti during the summer of his junior year; he received and accepted a job offer from them during his senior year. Musically, he plays the piano, violin, and cello, and he is also certified to teach piano at Joy Music Studio. He won many first prize competitions as a piano accompanist for solo instruments as well as several scholarship prizes for his piano studies. He is also proficient in tuning pianos and gives quality and competitive private swim lessons to students of all ages.
Sophia Susanna is currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineer with a concentration in computer engineering and a minor in music at Temple University, where she received a full tuition scholarship with the Presidential Scholarship for her academic excellence. She is also a TA (teaching assistance) for various college courses and tutors math (up Calculus III), science (Physics and Chemistry), and writing at Temple University. Musically, she was under the tutelage of Lee Snyder, a graduate of Juilliard and well-known music mentor in the violin world who studied under Dorothy DeLay and Ivan Galamian. Sophia won first place in numerous prestigious string competitions over the years. In March 2015, she brought a masterful performance of Kreisler to the stage with unique choreography in collaboration with the Metropolitan Ballet Company. Throughout 2013, Sophia served as first violin in the Newman Quartet coached by Sidney Curtiss. She also soloed with professional orchestras in Pennsylvania and Virginia and was concert-mistress for a chamber orchestra based in Virginia throughout 2011. In 2009, she also won first place in a distinguished harp competition. She is certified to teach violin and piano at Joy Music Studio.
Kara Tabitha is currently pursuing a degree in computer science with a minor in music. She is actively involved as a coach at Push the Rock, a Christian sports program. Musically, she plays the flute and is certified to teach piano and flute at Joy Music Studio. She won first prize competitions with the flute at several TCY Competitions, including a duo performance of A Dialogue for the Flute and Violin in 2016 with her sister, Sophia Yoo. In addition, Kara was a recipient of many scholarship awards at SMS. She also performed Terschak with the Metropolitan Ballet Company in 2014.
Lloyd Joseph is awing his audience with his amazing voice and his passion for the guitar and piano. He also plays electric guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele. He loves to just pick an instrument and sing along with it. In fact, in December 2016, he won first place in a global mission conference in Rochester, NY. In addition, he received an award at a vocal competition earlier in 2016 while under the tutelage of Judith Turano. He also teaches guitar and contemporary piano at Joy Music Studio. He serves by playing and singing for his church band.
The Yoo Siblings currently reside within the greater Philadelphia area and have a cute, five-pound, spoiled doxie-poodle (Muffin), and a lovable calico cat (Melody).
